What to do on December 12th? Help!

My health is poor at the moment. Just a caveat. So how do I vote here in Scotland in the General Election and be true to the faith and Catholic teaching? I have no idea currently I can exclude the other parties but am left with Labour or SNP. The current incumbent is SNP, who is a Christian and was nearly deselected by the party for voting against the imposition of abortion in N.I., but do I want a second independence referendum, not really, but I do want to stay in the E.U.. Labour really are a dead party now in … Continue reading What to do on December 12th? Help!

Heaven

I’ve just finished two books about people experiencing heaven. The first by a Catholic Priest called, To Heaven and Back : The Journey of a Roman Catholic Priest is by Fr John Tourangeau. The second recommended in the first is Heaven is for Real : Both were from Audible as I can no longer read books due to lack of eyesight and physical weakness. This second book is from a Protestant Pastor telling the story of his four year old son’s experience. I was frustrated by the first and inspired by the second. Now like all these stories a healthy … Continue reading Heaven

It’s been awhile

Sometimes my health both physical and mental debilitates me. Like an impenetrable dark thicket between me and the world. I have to cling then to prayers without words. I take the pain, the grief, the darkness, the twisted girders and hold them up in my mind in a bowl and offer it constantly to God. There are no words and almost never any comfort to be gained. But I offer it up for others that my suffering might be efficacious. The Lord appears distant. There is great emptiness, loneliness, isolation. Do I doubt, no I don’t not even when my … Continue reading It’s been awhile

The Secret Trick for Peace?

Like a sunbeam breaking into darkness so does the Spirit draw our attention to a certain verse in the Bible. That happened to me this morning at the Mass readings. I heard these words as though for the very first time in my life, even though I already knew them, “You must love your neighbour as yourself. Love doesn’t do anything wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is what fulfills the Law. Love doesn’t do anything wrong to a neighbour or Love is the one thing that cannot hurt your neighbour. What a lesson is to be found in that … Continue reading The Secret Trick for Peace?

The Fear that is Good For You

Driving through towering mountains on a black and stormy night, watching them grow closer and more menacing through a rain soaked windscreen as the road wound deeper ever deeper into the darkness, the wind howling, I knew a primeval fear, I clung to shuddering steering wheel and sang the 23rd Psalm. This is real fear. I have known that more than once, faced with a wild and stormy sea, fearing for my life. But there is another fear I face. Looking at the night Sky with no light pollution and knowing it stretches forever creates in me a a fear … Continue reading The Fear that is Good For You

A Must Read if you use Twitter

We forget this so often don’t we? We tick off our Mass attendance, Rosary, Lectio Divina, our prayers for others and think well done? But is this not just our duty as servants of the Lord where and how can we congratulate ourselves for doing only what is required of us? Our servanthood is just the beginning of obeying the will of the Father? Do we not pray, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven”? Just the beginning, not the end. We will never have time to rest this side of death it is only after … Continue reading A Must Read if you use Twitter

God IS

I’m not sure what this actually means for me but I have this phrase in my head all the time, during the reading of The Interior Castle. I can add anything to it like the word Love for example but that us not what I hear rather it is the profoundly deep understanding that God IS. I suppose it is as mysterious as “I AM”. It is a definitive statement about reality, God IS. Whether we like it or not God IS and whatever He wills comes to pass. Do not sink here into the idea of fatalism or worse … Continue reading God IS

Struggles or Why Fight?

The last few days have been a bit of a struggle. Trying very hard to work out what I feel about certain things in relation to the Church. I dislike the focus online of fighting between what appear to be Catholic factions. As, basically, a newcomer I am distressed. It all seems so trivial and one of the things that drove me out of Protestantism was incessant bickering. Are we not called to unity? Surely it is sufficient that we share One Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary and the Mass? As we work out our salvation in fear and trembling … Continue reading Struggles or Why Fight?

A Confession

This going to be hard to write. Health is not with me today and my thoughts are less than focussed. When I was a Conservative Evangelical Clergyman the rules were the rules. Harsh judgement on all those who had hardened their hearts to sin and The Bible. There was little in the way of gentle love or forgiveness and for a while I bought into this semi fundamentalist approach. I wasn’t kind or gentle and I am thoroughly ashamed of the coldness of heart that goes with Calvinism. I feel guilt to this very day about how wrong I was … Continue reading A Confession

The Day I Long For

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4 Feeling particularly battered today by my various illnesses. This is true of my major depressive order which today has me crippled with anxiety so that I can barely breath. There is no external cause for this at all. I just feel crushed by it. I run to God, the Blessed Virgin and my saints. I seek comfort and peace but find none so I offer … Continue reading The Day I Long For
